We invite you to enjoy this tour of all the best places in northern Peru to strategically observe endemic species: the Waqanki Lodge in Moyobamba (to observe a variety of hummingbirds and orchids), the Huembo Lodge (to observe the Marvelous Spatuletail Hummingbird); and the Owlet Lodge (to see numerous other species). Enjoy long walks along our trails accompanied by an expert naturalist guide from northern Peru.

We will seek out numerous endemic species and enjoy the stunning landscapes of Northern Peru on this route. You will see the Pale-billed Antpitta, Long-whiskered Owlet, the Marvelous Spatuletail Hummingbird, a variety of tanagers, mammals like the Yellow-tailed Woolly Monkey, insects, a variety of butterflies, beautiful orchids, and much more!

Day 1:

The group will arrive in Tarapoto early in the morning and be greeted by the tour guide and driver who will be waiting at the airport. We will depart in the direction of Moyobamba, stopping at the Quiscarrumi Bridge to observe the Oilbird. We’ll arrive at midday for lunch and then visit the orchids of Waqanki, where one can see various species of hummingbirds and beautiful native orchids. This is also a great spot to view parrots, antbirds, and the Koepcke’s hermit.

Possible birds: Oilbird, White-eyed Parakeet, Russet-backed Oropendola, White-necked Jacobin, Rufous-crested Coquette, Sapphire-spangled Emerald, Green & Brown Violetears, Long-billed Starthroat, Golden-tailed Sapphire, Great-billed, Black-throated & Rufous-breasted Hermits, Fiery-capped Manakin, Yellow-bellied Tanager, Short-tailed Hawk, Chestnut-bellied Seedfinch, Lafresnaye’s Piculet, Rufous Motmot, Coraya Wren, Long-tailed Tyrant, Rufous Nightjar, other possible nightjars.

Day 2:

We will have breakfast in the Waqanki Lodge and make one last visit to view orchids and hummingbirds, before traveling to the Owlet Lodge. On the way we will stop at Aguas Verdes – Reserva Arena Blanca, which has feeders for quail, tinamous, hummingbirds, and other species. We will then continue towards Llantería to observe more hummingbird species. We’ll arrive in time for lunch, and in the afternoon we can visit the Owlet Lodge observation tower. Before nightfall we will have an excellent view of the treetops and nocturnal birds.

Day 3:

After breakfast we will explore the Owlet Lodge facilities and four of the trails: Tino Trail, Grallaria Trail, Monkey Trail and Owlet Trail. These offer a wide variety of distances to hike and species to observe, so we can choose depending on how we are feeling physically, then enjoy the rest of the day at the observation tower. We will have lunch at the Owlet Lodge and in the afternoon view hummingbirds from the lodge itself.

Day 4:

After breakfast we will drive to the Royal Sunangel trail (about half an hour from Owlet Lodge) accompanied by our guide. Along the trail we will observe Bar-winged Wood-wren and other species of tanagers. We will have lunch back at the Owlet Lodge and after a rest we’ll have the afternoon free to explore the surrounding area. If we did not yet see the Long-whiskered Owlet we can return to the trail this evening to view this bird.

Possible birds: As yesterday, White-faced Nunbird, Red-hooded Tanager, Royal Sunangel, Bar-winged Wood-Wren, Equatorial Greytail, White-capped Tanager & Vermilion Tanager.




Day 5:

We will walk the trails very early to have the best chance of observing mammals and the Yellow-tailed Woolly Monkey (Oreonax flavicauda). If we have good weather and enough time, we can also visit Llantería and venceremos.

Day 6:

We will get up very early to head towards Anexo San Lorenzo (belonging to the Community San Lucas de Pomacochas) and look for birds endemic to this zone, including various antpittas, tanagers, and hummingbirds. Later in the afternoon we will leave for Huembo Reserve to observe numerous hummingbirds, including the Marvelous Spatuletail.

Day 7:

We will take advantage of the feeders to observe the Marvelous Spatuletail, and then have lunch at Huembo. In the afternoon we will enjoy the facilities and have the opportunity to view over 15 different species of hummingbirds which frequently visit the feeders

Day 8:

Early in the morning we will leave towards the Gocta Waterfalls, where we will observe various species of birds. During the course of this journey we will make a few stops to enjoy the scenic beauty of this zone at natural lookout points

After breakfast we will head towards Tarapoto; We can take advantage to see birds around Tarapoto in Juan Guerra and the bridge Colombia, you can buy souvenirs in the city.
